For decades, there's been a stigma in American animation. While Japan has made anime in all genres that target every age range, taste, and demographic, American animated shows tend to come in only two flavors. They're either made for kids, or veer in the complete opposite direction by making a raunchy sitcom à la South Park, Family Guy, or Rick and Morty. While those shows are great for what they are, adult animation has the potential to be so much more. Despite what the tabs on your average streaming service says, animation is a medium, not a mere genre that needs to stick to the same conventions. The rising popularity of anime in the West over the past decade is proof of this, as people of all ages have been discovering a variety of shows that suit their specific tastes, from the all-ages adventures of One Piece, to the mature and nuanced themes of Evangelion.
