Netflix premiered the groundbreaking Japanese same-sex reality dating show The Boyfriend on July 9, 2024. Since then, it has caused quite a huge stir and not for the typical reasons. Where your Love is Blind producers have allegedly overserved and underfed their contestants to try and generate more conflict, The Boyfriend features very little production intervention at all. The Independent called The Boyfriend "the antidote to Love Island" for its genuine contestants, authentic environment, and overall more sophisticated approach to matchmaking. Not only that, but it has easily made a case for being one of the most historically significant LGBTQ+ shows of all time. It is quite transgressive for a series like this to be produced in Japan, the only G7 nation that still doesn't recognize same-sex couples.
