Normal feels like eating cookie dough. It’s delicious and serviceable, but it would taste much better if it had time to bake and fully develop. The shame is that the vestiges of a truly thrilling action movie are present: there are vengeful assailants, encamped spaces for all manner of projectiles to fly and guns. Lots of guns. Yet it’s far easier to mourn what could have been rather than appreciate the final product. Those in the mood for familiar action-movie comforts will appreciate the contours of what director Ben Wheatley has outlined here. But the film could have been so much more, given its ingredients.
