The fact that Hope works as well as it does (and man, does this film cook) is miraculous, considering it violates an unwritten rule of thriller cinema: if you’re going to draw out your opening to excruciating lengths, torture us with suspense about the nature of the threat, and withhold the gruesome visage of your hideous monster for almost an hour, that monster had better be damn terrifying. Well, in Hope, the aliens who land in the Podunk town of Hope Harbor, South Korea, look as if Dwayne Johnson’s Scorpion King gave birth to the baby fromThe Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2while riding a fathier through Canto Bight in Star Wars: The Last Jedi (which, if you’re versed in crappy CG, means it’s very crappy).
