Tom Cruise's cinema-resurrecting blockbuster Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed $1.4 billion at the global box office in 2022, has been saved in a district court after writer Shaun Gray attempted to sue Paramount for copyright infringement. In his lawsuit, filed in April of last year, Gray claimed that he'd written notable sequences for the movie after screenwriter Eric Warren Singer and director Joseph Kosinski employed him to help crack the storyline. This allegedly included the opening scene, where Captain Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell breaks speed records in a prototype fighter jet. Gray argued that since he never reached a work-made-for-hire deal with the studio, he's technically a co-author of the screenplay.
