One of the year's most talked-about horror movies is A24's Backrooms. Part of the reason the movie scored so much buzz is that it came from 20-year-old director Kane Parsons, and also because it was based on a series of YouTube shorts he made on a minuscule budget. Another reason there's been so much discussion surrounding the movie, though, is that it is exploring the growing genre of "liminal horror." While titles like Vivarium, Skinamarink, and Exit 8 all explored similar themes previously, the specific premise and execution of Backrooms makes it arguably the most effective liminal horror movie to date.
