There are actors who disappear into roles, and then there’s Jason Statham, who has somehow turned “standing there and looking dangerous” into one of the most reliable movie star personas of the last three decades. The roles he’s played range from hitmen to mercenaries to ex-operatives with conveniently classified history. They tend to blur together a little, but Statham’s screen presence never does. What cuts through all of it, though, is a small and more precise slice of his catalog, and it’s the gangster movies. The ones where organized crime is more than just a setting.
